Secret Sips to Oak or Not to Oak

Secret Sip is a wine guessing game.

NOTE: This is a great way to promote your business at any off-site event. It uses much less wine than just sampling and judging the wines. The event gets guests involved and they really spend time analyzing the wine. It's a fun event and it usually draws a crowd around your booth or table and it creates a memorable experience.
Remember the following tips when you are preparing for your wine tasting party:

6-12 people are the optimal group size for wine tasting. If you have more than 12 people, you will have to get 2 bottles for each tasting.

During this event you will have 5 - 6 white wines for our customers to sample. The bottles should be covered so that they can not see what the wine is. Please purchase The Wine Tasting Kit from our website. The Wine Tasting Kit (our Part#680-4502) need to be purchased in sets of 6. You will use one kit during the open house and then sell the other 5. They cost $10 each and you can retail them for $19.99. These can also be purchased as a fun gift to give someone. A sales sheet featuring this as a special for $16.99 is also attached below. It is your option to offer this an incentive for your open house.

The customers are asked to sip the wine and try to guess the wine type. Take a sip of the wine. Roll it around the inside of your mouth so that it coats all parts of your tongue. Each part of the tongue identifies different sensations so it is important to hit them all. Can you taste any residual sugar? Is the wine high in acidity or tannins? Is it simple or complex? Is it of a low or high quality? These and many other questions can be answered with the palette. Certain grapes are high in residual sugar such as Riesling, Pinot Blanc and Gewurtztraminer. Others are high in tannins such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Nebbiolo. A wine that has just one flavor or aroma is called simple, while wines with many flavors and aromas are considered to be complex. Complexity is a sign of quality. These are all clues to the wine’s origin, style and age.

Please print the attached Secret Sips Tasting Guide, wine descriptions and answer sheet, so they can take notes and write down their answers. You should have a gift for the winners who guess all the wines correctly. Our Vintner's Circle tee shirts make a great prize.

Have some plain crackers placed on a clean white dish close to the the tasting area. Avoid cheese and olives in a blind tasting. Have a jug of water and a water bucket out so your guests can rinse their glass between each tasting.

Wine glasses are preferred for all our tastings, avoid using paper or plastic cups. Your guests can hold the glass by the stem and swirl without spilling. Aroma gives the best hints in blind wine tasting.
