Brunello is the name of an Italian wine from the Tuscan region, located in the center of the country. Brunello is made up of the Sangiovese grape, which is one of Italy’s most famous (“Brunello” means “the dark one”, which is Sangiovese’s unofficial nickname.) Brunello is a wine with smooth tannins and big, ripe fruit on the nose. It is a relatively highly acidic wine, which means it pairs extremely well with food. Depending on the wine’s exact origins, Brunello can feature other grapes, like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Brunello ages well; after a few years in the bottle, its tannins mellow out and its flavors develop true harmony.
