Refreshment WineLighten up. Let your hair down. Isn’t that what summertime is all about? And, what better to go with that “chilled out” feeling than a crisp, cool, and exotic refreshment wine. These “free spirits” of the wine world are flavorful collaborations that allow you to experience the great varietals you enjoy all year round with a lighter feel and a splash of fruity goodness. They are perfect for patio, picnic and poolside and are fabulous to pair with garden-fresh summer fare, spicy barbecue and light lunches.

Here are some Bohemian cousins to your traditional favorites. If you love those hearty reds, try an acai raspberry or blackberry Cabernet, a pomegranate Zinfandel, a wildberry Shiraz or a cranberry Chianti or Malbec. These wines are true to their original nature but with a burst of berry flavor.

For white wine drinkers, imagine a light, crisp Pinot Grigio, accentuated by juicy honeydew melon and tart kiwi fruit, a citrusy Sauvignon Blanc enhanced by tangerine and lemon, a Riesling with a green apple kick, or a soft White Merlot livened up with strawberries.

On the sweeter side, Ice Wines (made from frozen grapes) are medium to full-bodied wines with intense, yet refreshing, fruit flavors. They make great endings to a meal or party.

If you really want to mix it up, treat your taste buds to a wine-based lime or strawberry Margarita or Mojito. And, don’t forget about the always fun, festive and versatile Sangria.

It’s time to stock up on these unconventional summer sippers. Then, sit back, put your feet up and relax!
